“Be Present in All Things, and Thankful for All Things.”– Maya Angelou
Greetings! Thank you for taking the time to visit mindfulexistence.blog. In preparation for the next decade, I decided to create a platform apart from social media so that I could share imperative life lessons and thought-provoking ideas with people outside of my immediate circle.
I am incredibly excited about what the next ten years of my life will bring! This past year, I made a conscious effort to live mindfully. You may ask, how does one practice mindfulness? After searching for the answer to this question over the past twelve months, I have determined that a mindful existence can be built with six key elements; presence, intuition, receptivity, rest, reflection, & revision.
Channeling your energy into these six elements is incredibly rewarding from beginning to end. You can think of the elements as seeds and mindfulness as a garden in peak bloom; each seed must be carefully cultivated over time so that it can grow to full capacity. In turn, the elements will help you to grow to your full capacity.
Overall, mindfulness has helped me to live with a greater sense of acceptance and gratitude. Below, I explain how I practice mindfulness in my day-to-day life.
I do not allow external noises or secondary distractions to interrupt the moment that I am currently in. I am also selective with (1) the foods that I eat (2) the products that I buy (3) how I spend my time (4) the people that I surround myself with (5) the feedback that I listen to. I feel the most present when my energy is being put to good use – I never feel as though my energy is being wasted when I do these things.
I follow my instincts in terms of a stoplight. In any given situation, I look for a signal that indicates whether I should take immediate action, proceed with caution, or practice patience. My intuition is always a source that I can rely on because it knows what is best for me. So, I try to listen to it as well and as often as I can. This has been a game changer.
ALWAYS make it a point to remain open to receiving new information and messages. You never know what you could learn from talking with someone. In a world where so many of us feel misunderstood, a constructive open line of communication is everything. What’s the most important part of the communication process? Listening.
I simply cannot overstate the importance of rest. If we feel fully rested, we are more likely to wake up every morning feeling as though we have been graced with another fresh start. However, rest does not only mean 8+ hours of sleep. Ask yourself, is your body, mind, or soul feeling restless? If so, you may need to pay more attention to your physical, emotional, and spiritual cravings.
Reflection has proven to be a crucial element in my journey towards mindful existence. When I look for a reason or an explanation, I make sure to take a neutral perspective by taking myself out of the equation. I also stay grounded by looking at life in terms of the big picture. Habitual reflection has lifted several emotional weights from my shoulders including pity, blame, guilt, and anger.
Revision is essential to growth. From the time that I was 16 years old, I have kept a journal to set new goals and to track my progress on a timeline. If something does not go as planned, my journal entries help me to assess how I can better prepare for the next time that I find myself in a similar situation. I recommend tracking any goals having to do with school, career, fitness, feelings & finances.
In essence, the content of this blog will cover a broad range of topics that connect back to the six elements. I hope that you feel invigorated while reading these posts, maybe some of you will even feel inspired enough to start your own journey towards a mindful existence. Cheers to you!
